Day One of Thirty
There’s nothing process or check in the box about it. It’s gut feeling, sometimes they have a certain draw to them where I want to capture their expressions, sometimes it’s a gut feeling. Honestly, a lot of it is internal EQ. If I’m not relaxed, or rested, or feeling right, I don’t ask as much. Approaching people takes some composure (I think the word is equanimity?), with out it, things go wrong quick. But it’s a mutual decision; I pivot a lot on them agreeing to having a picture taken. Some folks are not.. there enough to be ok with having their picture taken, some you can tell will not want to have their photo taken. Most all cases, you gotta respect the no. After years, there is an instinct on who will say yes, and who is better to say hello and pass by. Some passive thought goes into situation and framing. It took a while to learn that light can really alter the feel of a portrait on the street, making some people seem more angry or more happy or more.. something they aren’t.
